About

I completed my PhD in philosophy at the University of St Andrews in the summer of 2008. Before that I studied at the University of Pavia and at the University of Washington, Seattle. I joined the Newport Social Ethics Research Group (SERG) in the spring of 2007, whilst writing up my thesis.

My work focuses on the theoretical foundations of liberalism. In particular, I'm interested (i) in the historical development of the liberal tradition, (ii) in the legitimacy and justification of political authority, (iii) in the accommodation of ethical diversity, and (iv) in the intersection between those sets of issues.

I'm currently concluding work on EuroEthos, an international and interdisciplinary research programme funded by the European Commission (Framework Programme 6), and developing my own research projects. So I'm currently writing on political realism and moralism, modus vivendi, political liberalism, justificatory liberalism, the capability approach, slippery slope arguments, and a few other issues I can't remember just now.
